Bookmakers raise alarms over French Open match

Police are investigating reports of suspicious betting on a women’s doubles fixture in the current competition.

France.- An investigation has begun after a number of bookmakers reported suspicious bets on a women’s doubles match at the French Open currently taking place in Paris.

According to Germany’s WELT newspaper, bookmakers raised concerns over bets worth hundreds of thousands of euros placed during the first round match between Andreea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig (Romania) against Madison Brengle (USA) and Yana Sizikova (Russia).

Police are said to be investigating whether the fifth game in the second set may have been manipulated for betting fraudsters.

The match saw the Romanian pairing of Mitu and Tig progress to the next round after a two-set win (7: 6, 6: 4).

Recordings of the fifth game show the Russian Sizikova caused two double faults in a short time and then slipped, failing to make a return.

In 2019, the Tennis Integrity Unit issued bans against more than 20 professionals for manipulating matches for betting purposes.
