Betsson acquires stake in Canadian startup Slapshot Media
The online gambling operator has acquired 28 per cent of the shares in Slapshot Media
Canada.- Betsson Perch Investments, a subsidiary of online gaming operator Betsson, has acquired 28% of the shares in Canadian start-up Slapshot Media for $2.4m.
The acquisition comes as part of Betsson’s strategy to partner locally and gain position in regulated markets.
Pontus Lindwall, CEO of Betsson said: “This investment is another step forward in Betsson’s continued ambitions to grow in the North American market. The Canadian market represents a great opportunity for Betsson to increase the share of revenues from regulated markets.
“The local know-how and experience that the founders of Slapshot Media Inc possess will position Betsson well on the upcoming regulation of the Canadian market”.
Canada will officially legalise single-event sports betting on August 27, David Lametti, Canada’s minister of justice and attorney general, announced last week. The Senate passed bill C-218 in June, amending a line in the Canadian Criminal Code.
