Yoshihide Suga will become the 99th Prime Minister of Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 71-year-old politician secured 377 votes, beating contenders Fumio Kishida (89 votes) and Shigeru Ishiba (68 votes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be good news for the fate of Japan&#8217;s integrated resorts (IR) project, since Suga has shown a firm intention to move forward with the plan to grant three IR licences in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suga said in a TV interview recently: \u201cI think that IRs are indispensable for our tourism promotion efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Although people tend to focus only on the casinos, the government intends to promote IRs as places with various facilities and hotels where families can come and stay during international conferences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suga will be nominated as Prime Minister at an extraordinary Diet session on Wednesday, with the new cabinet to be inaugurated on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yokohama, Osaka and Nagasaki are three of the cities in the running to bid for IR licences, although they have had to <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/favourite-for-japanese-pm-wants-ir-project-to-continue\" target=\"_blank\">delay their request-for-proposal processes<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in light of the absence of a basic policy from national government to select a private partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts have said it is likely that Japan will delay its IR development process by <strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/japan-could-put-back-ir-plan-by-a-year\" target=\"_blank\">about a year<\/a><\/em><\/strong> due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yoshihide Suga has been selected to succeed Shinzo Abe as president of the\u00a0Liberal Democratic Party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":9966,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Yoshihide Suga has been elected president of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, positioning him to become the next Prime Minister.
