{"id":9431,"date":"2020-08-27T22:06:43","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T22:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=9431"},"modified":"2026-04-24T02:21:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T05:21:52","slug":"malaysia-to-keep-borders-shut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/malaysia-to-keep-borders-shut","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia to keep borders shut"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Authorities fear imported cases of Covid-19 would ruin the country\u2019s success in controlling the outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia.- Malaysian authorities have decided to keep borders closed after August 31, when current measures to control the Covid-19 pandemic are due to be revised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said during a press conference that the country was not &#8220;ready to relax what is being enforced at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the measure was to prevent imported cases of Covid-19 entering the country, which has had success controlling the pandemic, currently reporting only single-digit numbers of cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia&#8217;s Ministry of Health reported five new cases of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, taking the official rolling tally to around 9,300. The country has reported 125 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia&#8217;s borders have been closed to foreign nationals since March. They are currently only open for Malaysian nationals who <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/singapore-malaysia-travel-bubble-to-start-in-august\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commute to Singapore<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Nancy Shukri supported the decision to keep borders closed.
