{"id":8487,"date":"2020-07-28T22:50:16","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T22:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=8487"},"modified":"2026-04-24T03:15:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T06:15:51","slug":"plunge-in-number-of-macau-gaming-employees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/plunge-in-number-of-macau-gaming-employees","title":{"rendered":"Plunge in number of Macau gaming employees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 5,200 people in the gaming sector found themselves without a job in the second quarter of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macau.- Macau\u2019s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has revealed that 5,200 gaming sector employees lost their jobs in the second quarter of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <strong><em><a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/employment-and-economic-forecast-in-macau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first quarter of the year<\/a><\/em><\/strong> there were about 87,500 people employed in Macau\u2019s casinos and junket operators, but by the end of Q2 the number was down to 82,300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unemployment rate in the city rose from 2.1 per cent to 2.5 per cent in the same period, up from 1.7 per cent in the last quarter of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>DSEC<\/em><\/strong> stated: \u201cAmong the unemployed population searching for a new job, number of those previously working in gaming &amp; junket activities and in restaurants &amp; similar activities showed relatively large growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DSEC also said the general underemployment rate rose by 0.8 percentage points to 3.4 per cent in the last quarter. The number of the underemployed grew by 3,300 to 13,900, with the majority working in gaming and junket activities, transport, logistics, construction, retail, and the hotel industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The median monthly earnings for workers in Macau was MOP17,000 (US$2,129) at the end of 2019 but by the quarter that ended on June 30 had dropped by MOP15,000 (US$1,879).
