{"id":8296,"date":"2020-07-21T21:27:47","date_gmt":"2020-07-21T21:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=8296"},"modified":"2026-04-24T03:28:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T06:28:31","slug":"macau-ebitda-should-break-even-in-q3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-ebitda-should-break-even-in-q3","title":{"rendered":"Macau EBITDA \u201cshould break even in Q3\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Morgan Stanley has lowered the expectations for GGR recovery this year but believes casinos should break even in Q3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- Credit consultant Morgan Stanley has cut its forecast for Macau\u2019s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2020 and improved its views on its recovery for the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some financial analysts believe Macau\u2019s recovery <strong><em><a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/analysts-bet-on-macaus-fast-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will be quicker than expected<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Morgan Stanley is not convinced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This consultancy expects final GGR to be down 60 per cent year-on-year, lower than its previous forecast of a 55 per cent drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revised numbers reflect the <strong><em><a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-mass-and-vip-business-down-by-95\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lack of signs of recovery in the second quarter<\/a><\/em><\/strong> as tourism to Macau remained meagre. The firm said it had taken into account the fact that Guangdong province has not yet begun to issue visas for travel to Macau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Morgan Stanley believes Macau&#8217;s gaming industry will be able to break even again in the third quarter by reducing operating expenses and rationalising costs. It foresees that the mass market will bounce back slower than the VIP segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts Praveen Choudhary, Gareth Leung and Thomas Allen said: \u201cIndustry EBITDA should break even in the third quarter of 2020, even though GGR is lower and revenue mix is weaker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morgan Stanley expects a gaming EBITDA to reach US$160 million in the third quarter and US$1.38 billion in the fourth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city would not return to 2019 levels until 2022, the firm said. GGR would increase 110 per cent in 2021 to US$31.1 billion, revised up from 90 per cent in the last report but still 15 per cent below 2019 levels.
