{"id":8208,"date":"2020-07-16T22:24:48","date_gmt":"2020-07-16T22:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=8208"},"modified":"2026-04-24T03:33:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T06:33:58","slug":"macau-mass-and-vip-business-down-by-95","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-mass-and-vip-business-down-by-95","title":{"rendered":"Macau mass and VIP business down by 95%"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Both mass and VIP gaming revenues plummeted by more than 95% year-on-year in the second quarter because of Covid-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Macau.- The <strong><em>Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau<\/em><\/strong> has revealed gross gaming revenue (GGR) for second quarter, showing deep falls in mass-market gaming as well as the VIP business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mass-market GGR for the quarter totalled MOP1.73 billion (US$216.3 million), which meant a 95.5 per cent drop from the same period last year and an 89 per cent decline since the first quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VIP business took only MOP1.50 billion (US$187.8 million), 95.7 per cent less than in the second quarter of 2019 and 89.9 per cent down from the first quarter this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means the mass market represented 53.53 per cent of all casino GGR, up from 52.81 last year, while the VIP market&#8217;s share fell to 46.47 per cent from 47.19 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GGR from slot machines in Macau was down 88.4 per cent year-on-year to MOP432 million (US$54 million). Their contribution to total gaming revenue increased from 5.07 per cent to 13.36 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Live multi game products brought in MOP129 million (US$16.15 million), 81.4 less than in the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, the Bureau reported that Macau casinos has <strong><em><a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/macau-sees-worst-ggr-results-yet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seen the worst GGR results in history<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, with a 97 per cent drop year-on-year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local casinos and <strong><em><a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/analysts-bet-on-macaus-fast-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial analysts<\/a><\/em><\/strong> expect that now that travel restrictions from mainland China have been lifted, casino revenue may begin to recover.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Both mass and VIP gaming revenues plummeted by more than 95% year-on-year in the second quarter because of Covid-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":8212,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"is_press_release":false,"is_interview":false,"is_opinion":false,"focusai_summary":"Macau's Q2 Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) plummeted over 95% year-on-year across both mass-market and VIP segments due to Covid-19 restrictions, with slot machine revenue also significantly declining.
