In Ganjam, police arrested 115 people and seized Rs 2.08 lakh (US$2,191), while the operation in Berhampur resulted in 52 arrests and the seizure of Rs 3.48 lakh (US$3,666) and 36 mobile phones. The suspects were booked under the Odisha Prevention of Gambling Act.

The latest arrests follow similar raids in Ganjam on October 20, when police arrested 61 people and seized Rs 2.19 lakh (US$2,307). The raids targeted gambling activity that traditionally increases around Kumar Purnima in parts of Ganjam district. Some residents believe gambling during the festival can bring luck and prosperity due to its association with Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth.

Police have maintained that the festival tradition does not justify gambling, which is prohibited, and said enforcement efforts would intensify in the coming days.
