New Zealand\u2019s Department of Internal Affairs (DIA)<\/strong> has secured commitments to return NZ$11.5m (US$6.6m) to community organisations following a review that identified accounting and compliance problems among Class 4 gambling operators<\/strong>. The review examined how licensed gambling societies handled proceeds from non-casino gaming machines and found cases where funds earmarked for community grants were used for expenses, including the purchase of gaming machines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the DIA, slots, known locally as pokies, generate more than NZ$1bn (US$577.7m) annually. Gambling societies are required to distribute proceeds through grants to community organisations under the Gambling Act<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation led to enforcement action against One Foundation<\/strong>. The DIA suspended the operator\u2019s licence for six days after identifying failures in its accounting for gambling proceeds and finding that the society had not surrendered a licence for one of its venues as required by law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DIA has issued new financial guidance for Class 4 operators covering accounting requirements and the handling of gambling proceeds. The guidance provides practical examples to clarify operators\u2019 obligations and promote consistency across the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vicki Scott<\/strong>, director of gambling at the DIA, said the department would continue working with societies to recover funds for communities and ensure gambling proceeds are managed in accordance with the Gambling Act.<\/p>\n\n\n
