The article reports that gaming tax revenue in Macau reached MOP66.17bn (US$8.19bn) in the first eight months of 2026, accounting for 86.4 per cent of total revenue. Despite a 1.2 per cent decline in gross gaming revenue (GGR) year on year, casinos paid MOP7.83bn (US$970m) in gaming tax in August, up 9.5 per cent from July. Macau imposes a 35 per cent special gaming tax on GGR, with an effective tax rate of 40 per cent. The government aims to collect MOP92.53bn (US$11.45bn) in gaming tax for 2026, with 71.5 per cent of the target already achieved by August. The six casino concessionaires in Macau operate under 10-year contracts until the end of 2032.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Industry representatives in South Korea are concerned about proposed casino regulatory changes that could impact investment and regional competitiveness. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is in discussions with operators, with a potential delay in submitting the amendment due to upcoming holidays and government audits. The reforms include increasing the contribution to the Tourism Promotion and Development Fund from 10 to 15 per cent of gross gaming revenue and implementing a five-year licensing system. Concerns have been raised about the potential negative effects on investment. The government is considering transitional arrangements for existing casinos to minimise disruption. Casino revenue in Macau saw a slight decrease at the beginning of September, but remained higher than last year. Gross gaming revenue averaged MOP633m per day, a 4 per cent increase from the previous year but an 11.5 per cent drop from August. Mass-market daily revenue and VIP volume were down month-on-month. Macau’s August GGR was MOP21.89bn, a 1.2 per cent decrease year-on-year. The forecast for September’s daily GGR is between MOP650m and MOP670m. Two out of three international operators surveyed by the Hokkaido prefectural government are interested in pursuing an integrated resort in the region. While they see advantages in Hokkaido as an IR destination, concerns were raised about the renewal timeframe for approval of plans. Domestic IR-related companies also expressed interest in participating. Currently, only Tomakomai has definitively expressed interest in hosting an IR, with Hakodate showing interest but not committing. The prefecture has not yet decided to join Japan’s second IR application round. An updated IR policy is expected in October, with Japan’s first approved IR, MGM Osaka, set to open in 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cambodian government has announced a suspension of online gambling at casinos starting from October 2026.
