DGGI has recommended recording website and bank account information to help authorities trace payments linked to illegal betting networks.

India.- The Indian Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has proposed measures intended to improve the tracing of payments from online betting websites. The changes would require additional payment information to identify websites along with the bank accounts linked to GST registrations.

The additional payment information is intended to help authorities identify cases where betting platforms use separate merchant companies to collect customer funds. It could also help trace payment networks associated with other illicit activities. DGGI submitted its recommendations to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), where they are now being considered by the Department of Revenue.

The government has not yet decided which entity would be responsible for recording the website information or how the details would be verified. The measures are therefore expected to undergo further consultation with banks and payment companies before any requirements are introduced.

Under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, banks and payment systems are prohibited from processing transactions connected to online money games.
