South Korea.- The only South Korean casino open to local gamblers, Kangwon Land<\/strong>, has nominated former army capital defence command chief Kim Do-gyun<\/strong> as its next president and CEO. The move could end a more than two-year period without a permanent chief executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nomination was approved at the casino operator\u2019s 234th board meeting on Monday, but Kim, 61, will require further approval before taking up the three-year position. The final appointment to be made by South Korea\u2019s President following recommendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim previously served as director general of the North Korea Policy Office<\/strong> at the Ministry of National Defense and as secretary to the President for national defence reform at the Office of National Security. Kangwon Land has operated without a permanent CEO since Lee Sam-Geol<\/strong> left the position in December 2023. The company has since relied on interim leadership, most recently appointing Nam Han-gyu as interim CEO in March following Choi Cheol-gyu\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The board has also selected Kwon Soon-hyung and Yoo Jeong-bae as candidates for executive vice president positions. Kwon is an executive director at Geumcheon-gu Facilities Management Corporation, while Yoo previously led the Korea Coal Corporation. Jang Gyeong-yeol<\/strong>, former head of the National Intelligence Service\u2019s Gangwon branch, has been selected as a candidate for the standing audit committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed CEO and standing audit committee appointments will follow separate government appointment procedures, while the vice president appointments require shareholder approval. Kangwon Land will hold an extraordinary general shareholders meeting on August 26 at the Hione Palace Hotel. The agenda includes amendments to the company\u2019s articles of incorporation to reflect recent Commercial Act changes, including provisions covering electronic shareholders meetings, treasury shares and the separate election of audit committee members.<\/p>\n\n\n
