Lawmakers questioned wagering operators over child exposure to gambling ads while allegations were raised over VIP incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- The Australian Senate inquiry<\/a> into the federal government’s proposed online gambling reforms has seen scrutiny of the industry’s approach to gambling advertising and VIP inducements. Independent Senator David Pocock<\/strong> criticised industry representatives after Sportsbet said responsibility for children being exposed to betting advertisements on Spotify <\/strong>rested with the streaming platform and account holders. Pocock argued that response contradicted the industry’s repeated commitments to protecting minors from gambling marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inquiry also examined allegations that VIP customers were offered incentives to continue gambling<\/strong>. Former NRL player Luke Bateman<\/strong> told senators he received offers including free travel, hospitality and bonus bets and claimed that he was offered illegal drugs by a VIP account manager. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry representatives rejected the claims<\/strong> and called for any evidence of misconduct to be referred to regulators and law enforcement. Responsible Wagering Australia CEO Kai Cantwell<\/strong> argued that existing consumer protection laws are sufficient to address misconduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inquiry also highlighted ongoing political divisions over gambling advertising as several senators continue to argue that the proposal to limit the number of gambling advertisements shown each hour does not go far enough. Both Pocock and Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young reiterated their call for a complete ban on gambling advertising, while the government defended its package<\/a> as the most significant gambling reform introduced in Australia to date.<\/p>\n\n\n
