Macau\u2019s Judiciary Police said the suspects allegedly collected more than HK$1.4m by offering protection to rulebreakers on casino floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- Fourteen casino security guards have been arrested in Macau for allegedly operating a protection racket targeting people involved in illegal activities at casinos. Macau Business reports that the suspects are accused of forming a criminal syndicate that offered \u201csecurity maintenance\u201d services in exchange for money, allowing suspected casino rulebreakers to avoid scrutiny on gaming floors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group allegedly demanded \u201ccase-settlement fees\u201d from people caught violating casino regulations. The alleged scheme is believed to have generated at least HK$1.4m (US$180,000) in illicit proceeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to information released by the Judiciary Police, the 14 suspects were arrested at a casino in Cotai and at several residences across the city. The group reportedly includes two manager-level employees, one supervisor and several frontline security staff. All but two are Macau residents, with the alleged ringleader described as a 66-year-old employee who joined the company in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police said the suspects\u2019 actions are being investigated under charges related to coercion, extortion and participation in a criminal organisation. The investigation reportedly uncovered the involvement of five intermediaries and seven witnesses from mainland China. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the Judiciary Police criticised the suspects for allegedly damaging \u201cMacau\u2019s tourism reputation and casino security and order.\u201d Seven witnesses, five men and two women, are reportedly facing prosecution in connection with separate offences, including casino theft, fraud and accepting tips. Investigations remain ongoing. Authorities have not disclosed the name of the casino operator involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
