Malaysia.- Police claim to have dismantled an online gambling syndicate accused of processing around RM27m (US$6.4m) in bets a day in Malaysia. Coordinated raids across the Klang Valley<\/strong> that resulted in the arrest of 161 suspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking at a press conference at the Subang Jaya district police headquarters, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar <\/strong>said the operation under Ops Soga XI took place on July 16, targeting 19 residential and commercial premises in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Kumar, the syndicate created its own mobile application to accept football bets, including on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, along with other online gambling activities targettfrom customers in Malaysia and overseas. He said the group concealed its activities by operating through registered companies, some of which were presented as computer service businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those detained included 106 men and 55 women, including six foreign nationals aged between 19 and 62. Five Malaysian men arrested are believed to be company directors or shareholders. Officers also seized 182 desktop computers, 137 laptops, 152 mobile phones, together with networking equipment, bank cards and other devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Authorities have launched 14 investigations in connection with the operation. The suspects are being investigated under Sections 4C and 4E of the Betting Act 1953<\/strong>, Section 4G of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953<\/strong>, and Section 120B of the Penal Code<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ops Soga XI was a nationwide operation running from June 11 to July 20. Police made 649 raids resulting in 945 arrests, including 680 Malaysians and 265 foreign nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Officers say they seized nearly RM200,000 (US$48,883) in cash, uncovered RM35.15m (US$8.6m) in betting transactions and identified 637 websites, applications and social media accounts promoting illegal online gambling.
