The Philippines.- The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has released the first PHP10m (US$162,757) tranche of a PHP60m (US$976,542) scholarship fund for Bulacan. The initial funding was handed over to the Bulacan provincial government on yesterday (July 6) during a ceremony at the Bulacan Capitol Gymnasium. The scholarship fund will support the province’s Ayudang Hatid ay Tagumpay (AHT) Scholarship Program, which aims to expand access to tertiary and technical-vocational education for eligible students.

Under the programme, PHP40m (US$651,028) is intended to support 1,000 incoming college freshmen enrolled in four-year degree programmes, and the remaining PHP20m (US$325,514) technical-vocational education for another 1,000 students. PAGCOR chairman and chief executive officer Alejandro H. Tengco said the initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to ensuring that revenue generated from the regulated gaming sector is used to support public welfare programmes.

During the event, he announced more support for Bulacan through the planned construction of 10 three-storey school buildings and the establishment of the Bulacan Sports Academy for young athletes.
