Malaysia.- Police have launched a nationwide enforcement drive to curb illegal gambling and sports betting during the FIFA World Cup 2026, which runs from June 11 to July 19. The Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said Op Soga XI<\/strong> is being carried out across all state contingents with a focus on both online and physical gambling, including syndicate-run betting platforms and social media accounts used for promotion, as well as illegal betting outlets, agents and individuals involved in placing or organising wagers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities said enforcement efforts are also focused on disrupting the financial and digital infrastructure behind illegal gambling, with cooperation from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)<\/strong> and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM)<\/strong>. The agencies will work to identify and block gambling-related websites and transactions connected to syndicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police warned that individuals involved in any form of illegal gambling will face action under existing laws, including the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, the Betting Act 1953, the Penal Code, and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development comes shortly after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it will strengthen monitoring efforts<\/a> during the 2026 FIFA World Cup to address illegal online gambling and related digital content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
