A motion seeks to reduce the number of machines by 50 per cent over five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- The New South Wales Labor<\/strong> Part Conference is to debate a proposal to gradually reduce the number of gaming machines in the state. New South Wales currently has around 87,000 slots, dubbed poker machines locally. <\/strong>Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said he would table a motion to reduce that by half over five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal comes amid political pressure on the state’s Labor premier Chris Minns<\/a> to strengthen gambling reforms as player losses continue to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the past year losses from poker machines in NSW have grown from AU$8bn to more than AU$9bn, the problem is getting worse,\u201d Byrne said in a statement cited by local media. “The vast majority of that money is coming out of the pockets of people in working-class and lower-income communities, the very people Labor exists to represent.”<\/p>\n\n\n
