Bangladesh.- The Bangladeshi government is planning to repeal the Gambling Act of 1867 and replace it with a modern legal framework that contemplates online gambling. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed told members of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) that the drafting process is near completion and that the bill will be submitted to parliament in the upcoming session. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minister said current legislation was no longer suitable amid the rise of online gambling, particularly among young people, which he said posed risks to social stability and the economy. The new law is expected to tighten enforcement powers to tackle illegal betting networks online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahmed urged journalists to highlight the social risks linked to gambling, saying the media had an important role in raising public awareness and protecting young people from harmful digital influences.<\/p>\n\n\n
