The president of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations said many influencers may not fully understand the legal risks involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Malaysia.- Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) vice-president Datuk Indrani Thuraisingham<\/strong> has cautioned social media influencers against promoting online gambling platforms. He warned that they may not fully understand the legal risks involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said online personalities carry substantial influence over followers and should be more conscious of the impact of the products and services they endorse. She also expressed concern over the way gambling promotions are packaged as entertainment content, gaming material or opportunities for quick financial gain, making such content more appealing to younger users and individuals with limited financial literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also pointed to challenges within Malaysia\u2019s legal framework, noting that many of the country\u2019s gambling laws, including the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953<\/strong> and Betting Act 1953<\/strong>, were introduced long before the emergence of social media and online gambling. She expressed support for ongoing efforts to introduce stronger legislation focused specifically on online gambling, saying updated laws could help address enforcement gaps and emerging cyber-related gambling activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indrani also urged social media platforms to take stronger action against gambling-related content rather than relying mainly on public complaints and post removals, arguing that online gambling had evolved into a broader consumer protection and social issue.<\/p>\n\n\n
