Macau.- Data released by the Secretary of Security show a rise in gaming-related crime cases in Macau in 2025. Authorities opened 2,373 investigations between January and December, an increase of 917 cases, or 63 per cent, year-on-year.

The rise was largely due to the introduction of the new offence of illegal currency exchange for gambling, under Macau’s Law to Combat Crimes of Illegal Gambling, which took effect from October 29, 2024. There were also adjustments to statistical reporting methods.

Despite the overall increase, serious gaming-related crimes and those linked to organised criminal groups continued to show a downward trend. Cases of illegal gambling-related lending dropped 23 per cent to 194, while kidnapping cases linked to gaming fell 40.4 per cent to 28.
