South Korea.- The Ministry of Planning and Budget has forecast that South Korea’s annual lottery sales will hit KRW8.42tn (US$5.71bn) in 2027. That’s up 4 per cent from previous estimates.

Sales have nearly tripled since 2015, when they stood at KRW3tn (US$2bn). According to the Lottery Commission, the rise is closely tied to GDP growth and demographic shifts.

Proceeds after prize payouts and distribution costs are expected to reach KRW3.43tn (US$2.32bn), a 4.2 per cent increase from this year’s estimate. The funds are earmarked for welfare programmes, such as healthcare for elderly veterans living alone, night-time protection for low-income youth and mobility support for the disabled.

The government intends to maintain the current system of 12 lottery products, including Lotto 6/45 and Speedo, without price changes.
