Hong Kong.- Chief executive John Lee Ka-Chiu has defended the suspension of the proposed basketball betting rollout in Hong Kong. He says the decision reflects a cautious approach aimed at ensuring risks are properly managed.

The now-paused proposal had been expected to launch in September, following an announcement by financial secretary Paul Chan Mo-po in the annual budget last year. However, officials reversed course last week, blaming the rapid rise of prediction markets. The decision has financial implications for the Jockey Club, which has already committed HK$1bn (US$127.7m) and recruited staff to develop a basketball wagering system.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of the city’s Executive Council, Lee said the government’s decision to suspend the launch reflects its long-standing position that gambling expansion must be handled cautiously.

Lee said the combination of speculative trading and virtual assets on prediction markets has introduced new regulatory challenges that required closer scrutiny before any expansion of legal betting is considered.

“If we do not seriously look at the risk it will create, I do not think it is the right thing for the bureau to just blindly go ahead with what has been suggested,” he said.
