South Korea.- Stricter sentencing guidelines have been introduced for illegal gambling and gaming-related crimes<\/strong> in South Korea as part of an overhaul that also targets financial and money laundering crimes. The Supreme Court\u2019s Sentencing Commission<\/strong> said revised guidelines will take effect for cases indicted on or after July 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the updated framework, operators of unlicensed or quasi-casino businesses, including venues known as hold \u2019em pubs, could face increased prison sentences. The base sentencing range has been raised to between 10 months and two years, while aggravated cases could result in prison terms of up to four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guidelines introduce stricter treatment in cases involving minors<\/strong>, identifying the targeting or large-scale participation of underage individuals as an aggravating factor. Money laundering tied to criminal activities, including illegal betting operations, will be subject to enhanced penalties, particularly when proceeds are concealed, transferred abroad or linked to serious predicate crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although sentencing guidelines in South Korea are not legally binding, judges are required to justify any deviation from them in written rulings.<\/p>\n\n\n
