New guidelines set minimum standards for pubs and clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- The government of New South Wales (NSW) has published a code of practice for the use of facial recognition technology in pubs and clubs as part of efforts to reduce gambling-related harm. Released by minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris, the code establishes minimum expectations for venues that voluntarily adopt facial recognition systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is designed both to guide current users of the technology and to prepare the industry for future regulatory changes, including potentially mandatory facial recognition once a state-wide exclusion register is fully operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The code outlines standards for privacy, data handling and system governance. It was developed following a consultation with a range of stakeholders, including advocates and experts in the fields of gambling and health, government, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, the NSW Privacy Commissioner, industry, businesses and facial recognition service providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister for Gaming and Racing David Harris said: \u201cThe Minns Labor Government takes gambling harm minimisation seriously<\/a> and while the Coalition sat on their hands during their 12 years in government, we are continuing to work with industry to develop new and innovative measures to minimise patrons\u2019 harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will continue to deliver evidence-based reforms to ensure we are striking the balance of addressing gambling harm while supporting an industry that contributes billions to the NSW economy and employs more than 150,000 people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
