Japan.- Aichi Prefecture has allocated JPY276.6m (US$1.75m) in its fiscal year 2026 budget to study the possible development of an international tourism hub incorporating an integrated resort (IR). The move comes after Aichi confirmed in February that it may participate in Japan\u2019s second round of IR bidding, expected to run from May 6 to November 5, 2027, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The funding, labelled for \u201cInternational Tourism City Function Development Study Expenses,\u201d will support research into the infrastructure, services and facilities with a particular focus on the area surrounding Chubu Centrair International Airport. Authorities aim to explore how integrated resort components could complement the region\u2019s ambitions to become a major MICE and tourism destination<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The studies are expected to assess visitor demand and identify infrastructure gaps, ranging from transport links to convention facilities and hospitality offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scale of the investment contrasts with the more modest JPY9.98m (US$63,000) set aside <\/a>by Hokkaido<\/a> in its draft 2026 budget to support basic research and a policy review for an \u201cHokkaido-Style IR Concept\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan\u2019s integrated resort policy allows for up to three casino licenses under the IR Implementation Act. The first bidding round produced only one successful project: the US$10bn resort currently under development in Osaka<\/a> by a consortium led by MGM Resorts International and ORIX Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n
