The cabinet of the Indian state has approved new legislation aimed at cracking down on public gambling and organised betting operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

India.- The state cabinet has cleared the Uttarakhand Public Gambling Prevention Bill, 2026 to be introduced during the next session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. The measure is designed to curb illegal gambling activities and strengthen enforcement across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If adopted, the legislation will replace the Public Gambling Act of 1867, which still governs gambling offences in the state but imposes relatively minor penalties. Officials say the new framework will allow authorities to take stronger legal action against people who gamble in public spaces and those operating organised betting networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the proposed law, people caught gambling in public areas such as streets or lanes could face up to three months in prison, a fine of INR5,000 (US$54), or both. Organising gambling inside a residence could result in prison sentences of up to two years or fines of up to INR10,000 (US$108).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More severe penalties would apply to those running gambling dens or organised betting operations. Operating a gambling house could lead to prison terms of up to five years and fines reaching INR100,000 (US$1,090), while individuals involved in structured or syndicate-style gambling networks could face between three and five years of imprisonment and fines of up to INR1m (US$10,800).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State authorities say the reform is intended to modernise the legal framework and act as a stronger deterrent against illegal gambling activities, particularly organised operations that operate beyond the scope of the existing law.<\/p>\n\n\n
