Senator Sherwin Gatchalian says unlicensed betting sites continue to proliferate in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Philippines.- Senator Sherwin Gatchalian<\/strong> has urged lawmakers to strengthen legislative measures against illegal online betting operations. According to the Philippine News Agency, Gatchalian said unlicensed sites continue to proliferate and existing regulatory and enforcement mechanisms are not sufficient to curb their spread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese are like mushrooms, even if you block it now, it keeps coming back. It’s never-ending. The root of the problem must be cut,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senator said illegal online gambling platforms pose risks, such as loss of government revenue, lack of consumer protection, and increased exposure of minors and vulnerable individuals to gambling-related harm. He argued that without stronger statutory tools, authorities will struggle to effectively block, penalise, and dismantle offshore and underground operators targeting Filipino players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Senate hearing, Gatchalian asked the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center (CICC)<\/strong> if it had gone further than blocking the illegal gambling sites. The CICC said it has blocked an average of 50,000 online gambling sites<\/strong>, 95\u201397 per cent of which operate from outside the country. Authorities explained that they can only block access within Philippine jurisdiction, making full takedown impossible, which is a key enforcement challenge of cross-border operations.<\/p>\n\n\n
