Malaysia.- Malaysian deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has confirmed that the government is preparing a bill to tackle illegal gambling, with a particular focus on online betting. He stated that the legislation is expected to reach the Dewan Rakyat, the House of Representatives of Malaysia, at the next sitting.

Fadillah made the remarks after the handover ceremony of the annual grant to Village Development and Security Committees in Petra Jaya. He warned about the social effects of illegal gambling, particularly on the youth, noting that the legislation would strengthen measures to combat online gambling.

The deputy prime minister added that the new law would improve the ability of police and other authorities to respond to cases of illegal wagering and related offences. However, the draft legislation is still under consideration and has not been formally named. Authorities are also weighing the option of enacting it as a standalone act or integrating it into current legislation, such as the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. Fadillah stated: “Whether it will be a special act or incorporated under existing cybercrime legislation is still being studied.”

He said authorities would continue consultations with stakeholders to ensure the legislation is comprehensive and enforceable once tabled in parliament.
