Officials have detailed how much revenue foreign-only gaming zones generated in 2024, offering a clearer picture of the impact of Macau’s diversification push.

Macau.- Macau casinos generated around US$385m in gaming revenue from overseas players in 2024, according to figures disclosed by legislator Ip Sio Kai and reported by local media. The data provides one of the clearest snapshots to date of how much the city’s foreign-player strategy is contributing to casino revenues.

The revenue was generated in special gaming zones reserved for foreign passport holders, introduced as part of regulatory reforms tied to Macau’s new 10-year gaming concessions that began in 2023. Play in these areas is taxed at 35 per cent, compared with the standard 40 per cent rate applied to customers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

As a result, Macau’s six gaming concessionaires received a combined HK$150m (US$19m) in gaming levy relief in 2024. The amount reflects the government’s effort to incentivise operators to attract players from outside its traditional mainland Chinese customer base.

However, the figures also underline the limited scale of the segment. Macau’s total casino gross gaming revenue reached US$28.34bn in 2024, meaning overseas players accounted for just around 0.17 per cent of the market.
