A narrow majority credits Jeju\u2019s foreigner-only casinos with boosting inbound tourism and visitor spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

South Korea.- Just over than half of Jeju Island residents believe foreigner-only casinos contribute positively to inbound tourism and visitor spending. That’s according to a new survey <\/strong>released by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey of 1,000 residents found that 50.4 per cent agreed the island\u2019s eight casinos had helped increase foreign tourist arrivals, while 56.4 per cent said they boosted spending by overseas visitors. Similar slim majorities linked casinos to longer stays, job creation for locals (51.3 per cent), and higher fiscal revenue for the island (50.4 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respondents also cited broader economic effects, with 56.1 per cent agreeing that casinos had helped attract foreign capital. However, public opinion remained divided, with many people neutral on most indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 37.6 per cent of respondents said casinos had damaged Jeju\u2019s brand value and tourism image, while others cited worries related to gambling behaviour, youth education environments, and community impact. When asked about the sector\u2019s overall effect on local society, opinions were split between positive (32.4 per cent), negative (30.6 per cent), and neutral (37.0 per cent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 40 per cent called for stronger supervision, while 30.8 per cent supported greater government backing for the casino sector. Only 42.2 per cent were aware that the provincial government directly manages and supervises foreign-only casinos, highlighting a gap in public understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeju authorities said the results will guide efforts to improve transparency, strengthen information disclosure, and expand community-focused initiatives. <\/p>\n\n\n
