The Yat Yuen Canidrome will become a public sports complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- The government has awarded a MOP$1.34bn (US$167m) construction contract for the first phase of a project to redevelop the former Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome into a public sports park. A consortium led by Omas Construction Group, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Macau branch) and China Zhong Ji Industry and Installation secured the contract, ranking sixth in price among the 17 bids submitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 40,425-square-metre site and be built in two phases over 964 working days. Individual pavilions will host a mix of aquatic, indoor and outdoor sports amenities. Pavilion 1 will house adult and children\u2019s swimming pools, a basketball court, a children\u2019s cycling track and athletics facilities. Pavilion 2 will have a skatepark, table tennis spaces, climbing areas, volleyball courts and two floors of badminton courts. Pavilion 3 will have a five-a-side football pitch, multipurpose rooms and outdoor activity areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The redevelopment is part of a policy shift to diversify land use in Macau and enhance community assets, particularly on sites historically linked to gaming. The Canidrome was once a prominent fixture of the city\u2019s racing and betting scene. Its closure followed the implementation of the 2016 Animal Protection Law. Greyhound racing in Macau ended in 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Various proposals for the site emerged after the shutdown, including a plan for several schools, which was abandoned after a change in administration. A renewed vision under Ho Iat Seng led to the public sports park concept. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n
