Macau.- The gaming sector in Macau has seen a year-on-year decline in workforce numbers for the third consecutive quarter. According to the data released by the city\u2019s Statistics and Census Service, the sector employed 68,900 people at the end of September. That’s a 3.6 per cent decrease compared to same time last year and the lowest since since Q4 2023 (67,400).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employment in betting-related positions, such as croupiers and cage managers, fell 6.6 per cent year-on-year to 38,800. The decline is largely attributed to the closure of Macau’s satellite casinos, which were operated by concessionaires and private investors through revenue-sharing agreements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changes to Macau gaming law prohibit third-party owners from sharing gaming revenue from January 2026, allowing only a management fee through an approved management company. In response, operators announced in June that satellite casinos would close by the end of the year. Of the 11 operational at the start of the year, only six remain: Casino Landmark, Casino Kam Pek Paradise, Casino Fortuna, Casino Ponte 16, Casino Le Royal Arc, and Casino Casa Real, which is to close on November 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June, authorities predicted that around 5,600 local residents would be affected by the satellite-casino closures, including 4,800 people directly employed by gaming concessionaires, 800 employed by the satellite-casino owners, and 400 foreign workers. <\/p>\n\n\n
