India.- The Supreme Court of India<\/strong> has agreed to hear a petition that seeks a ban on online gambling and betting platforms disguised as social and e-sports games.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lodged by the Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change (CASC)<\/strong>, the petition requests the court to direct the Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology, Information and Broadcasting, Finance, and Youth Affairs and Sports<\/strong> to uniformly interpret the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025<\/strong>, and state laws to block online gambling and betting sites operating in the guise of social and e-sports games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CASC claims that despite a ban on online gambling, over 650 million people<\/strong> continue to participate, fueling an industry worth over Rs 1.8 lakh crore <\/strong>(US$20.3bn) annually. Virag Gupta, counsel for CASC, said the centre has details of around 2,000 platforms that allegedly operate outside the law. He wants the court to issue blocking orders against these sites under Section 69A of the IT Act. The Supreme Court has asked the union government to issue a formal response to the petition.<\/p>\n\n\n
