The New Zealand International Convention Centre is set to open in February 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

New Zealand.-  After ten years of delays, SkyCity Entertainment Group<\/strong> has taken possession of the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC)<\/strong> from Fletcher Construction<\/strong>, marking a milestone in the troubled infrastructure project. The project began in 2013 and was originally slated for completion in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setbacks included fire in 2019 fire that caused structural damage and flooding, followed by pandemic-related lockdowns. Fletcher Building CEO Andrew Reding<\/strong> described the process as \u201cone of the most technically demanding projects in New Zealand\u2019s construction history.\u201d The NZ$1bn (US$571m) facility is now entering its final phase of operational testing ahead of a February 2026 opening<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SkyCity CEO Jason Walbridge<\/strong> called the handover \u201ca major milestone\u201d, highlighting the NZICC as a \u201cpowerful catalyst for growth not just for Auckland, but for the entire New Zealand economy.\u201d The venue will generate more than 300 permanent and part-time jobs<\/strong>, and is expected to attract 33,000 international visitors annually<\/strong>, contributing an estimated NZ$90m<\/strong> in new economic spending, the company says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it opens, the NZICC will be New Zealand\u2019s largest conference and entertainment complex, capable of hosting up to 4,000 attendees<\/strong>. Its main theatre seats 2,850 people, and its exhibition hall can accommodate 3,300 for banquets. More than 100 events<\/strong> have already been booked for 2026, including major medical conferences and international symposiums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legal issues remain. SkyCity is suing Fletcher Building for NZ$330m (US$188m) in damages<\/strong> over the delays, while Fletcher has initiated its own High Court case against subcontractors blamed for the 2019 fire.<\/p>\n\n\n
