India.- The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)<\/strong> has petitioned the Supreme Court<\/strong> to make match-fixing a criminal offence. It says the move could help curb the influence of illegal bookmakers and corrupt players in the sport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the BCCI, match-fixing constitutes cheating by deception, which is already an offence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC)<\/strong>, and thus should be considered a criminal act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In documents filed with the court registrar on October 14, 2025<\/strong>, the BCCI highlighted actions it has taken, including implementing anti-corruption codes<\/strong> in 2019<\/strong> to empower the board to impose fines and lifetime bans on offenders. The body also organises awareness programs to promote fair play, integrity, and sportsmanship among players and officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A match-fixing scandal in Karnataka’s state cricket league in 2018-19<\/strong> implicated six individuals, including two players, a coach, and a club owner. However, in 2022<\/strong>, the High Court of Karnataka<\/strong> determined that the case was not a criminal one and dismissed it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
