{"id":777033501,"date":"2025-10-22T10:08:50","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/?p=777033501"},"modified":"2026-04-21T17:55:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T20:55:46","slug":"australian-mla-calls-for-inquiry-amid-criticism-of-northern-territory-racing-and-wagering-commission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australian-mla-calls-for-inquiry-amid-criticism-of-northern-territory-racing-and-wagering-commission","title":{"rendered":"Australian MLA calls for inquiry amid criticism of Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Justine Davis has called for a parliamentary review of the Racing and Wagering Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Australia.- Independent MLA <strong>Justine Davis<\/strong> has called for the Northern Territory\u2019s <strong>Racing and Wagering Act<\/strong> to be referred to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee for scrutiny following criticism of the <strong>Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission<\/strong> (NTRWC) in a <a href=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australias-northern-territory-regulator-under-scrutiny\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/focusgn.com\/asia-pacific\/australias-northern-territory-regulator-under-scrutiny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Four Corners investigation<\/a> by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf a commission whose chair accepts hospitality from bookmakers and maintains betting accounts has never cancelled a bookmaker licence\u2014despite numerous breaches\u2014is working well within its act, then the act itself has a problem,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission\u2019s chair, <strong>Alastair Shields<\/strong>, defended its operations, insisting that the NTRWC maintains \u201cvery strict\u201d conflict-of-interest processes. Industry representatives also rejected suggestions of leniency. \u201cThere\u2019s a misconception that they are not a robust regulator,\u201d said <strong>Kai Cantwell<\/strong>, CEO of Responsible Wagering Australia. \u201cThey have strong consumer protections and a strong understanding of the online environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ABC program alleged <strong>conflicts of interest and \u201ca pro-industry bias\u201d<\/strong> within the commission, which licenses more than 40 bookmakers and has effectively become Australia\u2019s national regulator for online betting. It found that the NTRWC meets once a month, has no full-time staff, and until this month, hadnot released an annual report since 1993. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NTRWC has now published its <strong>first annual report in over three decades<\/strong>. The report revealed that NT-licensed bookmakers handled 1.8 billion bets in 2024\u201325 with a total turnover of AU$42.4bn (US$27.5bn) and AU$18.8m (US$12.2bn) in tax revenue. It disclosed 562 complaints filed during the year, of which 478 were resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Northern Territory government<\/strong> has confirmed it is reviewing potential conflicts of interest among commissioners.
