Indonesia.- The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi<\/strong>) has reported that online gambling deposits in Indonesia reached Rp17tn (US$1.04bn) between January and June 2025, underscoring the persistence of unregulated <\/strong>activity<\/strong> despite enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of Digital Space Control, Safriansyah Yanwar Rosyadi<\/strong>, described online gambling as a growing challenge that impacts both the economy and social welfare. \u201cWe have blocked millions of contents<\/a>, but new ones continue to emerge just as fast. This is a global challenge that requires collective action<\/strong>,\u201d he said during a national forum on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), gambling-related transactions from 2017 to early 2025 reached Rp927tn (US$56.8bn). Law enforcement agencies have seized assets worth nearly Rp925bn (US$56.7m) from gambling networks over the past two years, according to the National Police\u2019s Cyber Crime Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials noted that some Indonesian workers have been recruited to operate offshore gambling sites under the promise of lucrative pay only to face labour exploitation. The government said that 70 per cent of online gamblers earn less than Rp5m (US$307) per month, with some identified as recipients of social assistance<\/a>. Benefits have been suspended for 603,000 welfare recipients found to be involved in gambling activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komdigi says it’s advancing a national strategy to address the issue on three fronts<\/strong>: domain and hosting shutdowns, collaborative cyber patrols and financial interdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n
