Taiwan\u2019s Chinese Professional Baseball League has fined players over involvement in online poker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Taiwan.- The Chinese Professional Baseball League <\/strong>(CPBL) has suspended and fined three pitchers<\/strong> from the TSG Hawks <\/strong>after an internal investigation found participation in online gambling. Players Guo Yu-yan<\/strong>, Chen Guan-hao<\/strong>, and Wu Yu-cheng<\/strong> were found to have taken part in online Texas hold \u2019em poker games earlier this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guo has received a 10-game suspension<\/strong> and an NT$100,000 (US$3,200) fine, while Chen and Wu were each suspended for five games and fined NT$50,000 (US$1,600).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the league\u2019s findings, an agent from Taiyu Sports Agency<\/strong> allegedly introduced Guo to the online poker platform between January and June. Guo then invited his two teammates, who reportedly stopped playing shortly after. As the initiator, Guo received the most severe sanction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEngaging in online gambling is not a sanctioned activity for players,\u201d the CPBL said in a statement. \u201cThis incident has damaged the reputation of Taiwan\u2019s professional baseball. Clubs must strengthen internal supervision and remind players of their professional responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPBL Secretary-General Yang Ching-lung<\/strong> suggested that a sports agent had encouraged players to join betting online. The latest incident comes after four players from other teams were penalised in August 2024 for participating in poker games at gaming lounges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taiyu Sports Agency<\/strong> has denied any wrongdoing and pledged to cooperate fully with the league, clubs, and players\u2019 union. The agent named in reports, Cheng Ming-yang<\/strong>, issued a statement rejecting claims that he introduced players to gambling or arranged loans to cover related debts.<\/p>\n\n\n
