The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will send a delegation to Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Malaysia.- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission<\/strong> (MCMC) is to lead a delegation to Singapore next week to press global social media platforms, including Meta and TikTok, for stricter identity verification and faster removal of scam and gambling-related content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil <\/strong>emphasised the urgency of implementing electronic Know-Your-Customer (e-KYC) verification<\/strong>, which requires users to link accounts to official documents, such as MyKad, Passport or MyDigital ID. \u201cThe goal is to reduce anonymity, which enables scammers to operate at scale,\u201d Fahmi said at the 29th Public Service Psychology Conference. He said the MCMC spends the equivalent of a year\u2019s working hours each month reporting harmful content<\/strong>, with each post taking 30 minutes to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming Online Safety Act (ONSA), effective by year-end, will mandate platforms to tackle harmful content, including protecting children under 13 from social media access. The talks in Singapore, involving the Home Ministry and Attorney-General\u2019s Chambers, will focus on establishing faster reporting channels and setting a timeline for mandatory e-KYC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fahmi stressed that safeguarding Malaysia\u2019s digital environment is a priority. \u201cWe cannot rely on voluntary compliance<\/strong>,\u201d he said. \u201cStricter rules are essential to protect consumers and maintain trust in online spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
