Siobhan Isherwood and other Ward 3 councillors want to end greyhound racing at The Gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Australia.- A motion calling for Newcastle Council<\/strong> to back the end of greyhound racing in New South Wales<\/strong> will be introduced at a council meeting on September 23. The proposal seeks a transition plan to end the activity at The Gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newcastle Greens councillor Siobhan Isherwood and other Ward 3 councillors will present the motion, which follows the Tasmanian Government’s announcement of a transition plan to see the activity phased out in the state by 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isherwood wrote on Instagram: “The Greens are asking Council to stand up for greyhounds and put pressure on the State Government to establish a transition plan for the track at The Gardens. Greys deserve so much better than injuries, poor living conditions, and on-track or off-track death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our community deserves to put the land at Birmingham Gardens to better use than the current facility for gambling and cruelty. A funded transition plan will ensure that the industry can close fairly and safely, with funding for re-training, support services for those with gambling addictions, and for the greyhounds that will need re-homing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) recently criticised<\/a> claims made by the Animal Justice Party (AJP) of NSW<\/strong> about greyhound welfare. The AJP had claimed that \u201cevery 20 hours in NSW a greyhound dies from racing injuries.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GRNSW said: \u201cGWIC\u2019s figures confirm there is not a death from racing injuries every 20 hours in NSW which would equate to 440 deaths annually. In the past year there were two sudden deaths at a race meeting, 14 greyhounds humanely euthanised at a racetrack, and 44 greyhounds reported as euthanised by private veterinarian or having died off-track as a result of injury at race meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
