Australia.- The City of Joondalup, a Perth suburb, has banned all gambling on its properties, including community centres, libraries, halls, and sports clubrooms. The decision, passed unanimously by the city council, aims to reduce harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe city recognises that gambling-related harm extends beyond individuals to affect families and the broader community,\u201d authorities said \u201cTo help reduce harm and address associated social issues, the city prohibits any wagering activities on city-owned or managed property, for any purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy was prompted by a tenant\u2019s request to open a betting outlet in a community venue. Councillor Daniel Kingston, who proposed the ban, said it targets organised betting, not small-scale community events. “This won\u2019t stop bingo nights, raffles, or charity lotteries,” Kingston said, insisting that community groups can still hold fundraising activities like social poker or Calcutta auctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2022 survey by the Australian Gambling Research Centre found that 73 per cent of adults gambled in the past year, with lotteries (64 per cent), horse racing (38 per cent), sports betting (34 per cent), pokies (33 per cent), and casino games (22 per cent) being the most popular.<\/p>\n\n\n
