Australia.- Prime minister Anthony Albanese continues to express caution on calls for a federal ban on gambling advertising in Australia despite pressure from reform advocates<\/a> and recommendations from parliamentary inquiries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on ABC Australia, Albanese said that while the government acknowledges gambling-related harm, an outright ban could have unintended consequences. \u201cWhat\u2019s in our mind is the practicalities of whether people just go offshore. Then there\u2019s no revenue at all, and it doesn\u2019t solve the problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlighted measures already in place, including the BetStop national self-exclusion register and restrictions on the use of credit cards for online wagering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 Murphy Report recommended a phased three-year ban on gambling advertising across all media. The government has leaned toward more moderate reforms, such as limiting the number of adverts per hour and restricting their broadcast around live sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocacy groups, including the Alliance for Gambling Reform, argue that partial measures fall short, warning that continued exposure to gambling advertising disproportionately harms children and vulnerable people. Reformists insist that failure to deliver a ban would undermine public trust and perpetuate Australia\u2019s status as the Western nation with the highest gambling losses<\/a> per capita. The government is expected to deliver a full response later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n
