The Philippines.- <\/strong>Messaging platform Viber <\/strong>has pledged to work with Philippine authorities to ensure its policies on gambling advertising comply with local laws. The move comes after lawmakers raised concerns about gambling-related content on messaging and e-commerce apps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Rakuten Viber said its current policies allow gambling advertisements only in jurisdictions where such activities are legal<\/strong>, and on a limited basis. Advertisers must obtain written approval and demonstrate compliance with local and international licensing and age restrictions, it said. The company emphasised that while certain ads may be permitted, Viber itself does not host gambling content or provide payment services to gambling operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has said that it is monitoring messaging platforms and online shopping apps. DICT secretary Henry Aguda warned that apps could face suspension or bans if online gambling is detected on their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers had expressed concern over a shift to encrypted messaging platforms and e-commerce sites following the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas\u2019 order for e-wallet providers to cut ties with gambling services<\/a>. Senator Erwin Tulfo<\/strong> said operators had moved to platforms like Viber, Telegram, and Lazada to continue reaching their customers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Senate is expected to summon representatives from e-wallet firms, banks and telecommunications providers to assess the risks and establish stricter safeguards. Against this backdrop, Viber has reiterated its commitment<\/strong> to working with regulators and ensuring that its platform remains safe for users.<\/p>\n\n\n
