Macau.- The Macau United Citizens Association is urging the government and the city\u2019s casino operators to introduce reforms aimed at improving working conditions for gaming employees, the largest segment of Macau\u2019s workforce. According to the Macao Daily, executive director Tong Ho Lam said technological upgrades had boosted efficiency on casino floors but frequent changes to betting layouts were placing additional pressure on staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each layout change requires replacing table felts, forcing dealers to adapt to new designs and procedures, she said, adding that without an adaptation period, mistakes were more likely, often resulting in warning letters and added stress. Tong called for a defined buffer period before new layouts are fully implemented, arguing that this would reduce errors and foster a more positive response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tong also raised concerns about work arrangements during typhoon season. She noted that sudden changes in Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above often disrupt schedules, with some staff required to remain at their posts despite severe weather. She urged the government and casino operators to create clear attendance rules, improve transport options, and ensure fair compensation for those working during storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Tong also highlighted a demographic risk as many young employees entered the casino industry during boom years, meaning a large wave of retirements could occur simultaneously in the future. The association is advocating for more diversified leisure and tourism projects for broader career progression and horizontal mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n
