India.- Google answered questions but Meta didn’t show at a hearing of India\u2019s Enforcement Directorate (ED) into advertisements for illegal betting platforms. Google is now expected to submit documentation as part of the probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ED aims to determine how unauthorised betting apps such as Mahadev and Fairplay gained access to prime advertising slots on major digital platforms. Authorities believe these platforms may have misled consumers while generating illicit revenue, facilitating tax evasion and allowing money laundering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators are probing whether social media companies performed adequate due diligence before accepting ads. India\u2019s regulatory framework has prohibited gambling advertisements since 2022, but many platforms are accused of disguising themselves as skill-based games to circumvent the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its statement, Google reaffirmed its commitment to user safety and platform integrity, claiming it removed over 247m ads and suspended nearly 3m advertiser accounts in India in 2023. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has yet to respond or explain its absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ED has already filed cases against 29 public figures<\/a>, including Bollywood actors, social media influencers, and sports personalities, who allegedly promoted these apps. Authorities are reviewing whether payments made to these endorsers violate advertising standards or financial laws.<\/p>\n\n\n
