Japan.- Two well-known Japanese comedians, Asahi Saito and Hiroshi Sano of the comedy duo Butter Young, have been referred to prosecutors by Tokyo police for alleged involvement in illegal online gambling. The performers reportedly admitted to placing bets on overseas casino websites using their smartphones, despite Japan’s prohibition of online gambling.

The case emerged after their talent agency, Titan, conducted an internal audit and voluntarily reported its findings to law enforcement. The agency’s probe revealed that at least four of its artists had used online gambling platforms.

Authorities’ decision to release the comedians’ real and stage names has sparked debate in Japan, where entertainers often use on stage names to maintain boundaries between their public and private lives.

Japan has seen several self-reported admissions from athletes, entertainers, and influencers. Orix Buffaloes pitcher Taisuke Yamaoka confessed to using casino sites. Japan’s House of Councillors recently passed amendments to the Basic Act on Measures against Gambling and Other Addictions. The revised legislation now explicitly bans the creation or dissemination of content that promotes unauthorized gambling, laying the groundwork for further enforcement even as exact penalties remain undefined.
