Laos.- Authorities in Khammouane Province, Laos, have ordered the closure of all internet cafes and game credit shops found to be facilitating illegal gambling. The directive, issued by the Provincial Internet Management Committee, will come into force on July 15, and targets establishments promoting or enabling unauthorised gambling services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities claim that many internet shops are offering gambling to attract customers, particularly teenagers and students. Provincial officials says the activities pose risks to public order and young people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violators of the directive will face fines of up to LAK10m (US$ 460) and the seizure of computers and related equipment. The order also instructs provincial departments to halt the issuance of new business licences. Authorities have called on residents and public servants to report establishments that breach the law. <\/p>\n\n\n
