Thailand.- Prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced new measures to prevent tourists from entering Cambodia to gamble at casinos as relations between the two Southeast Asian nations continue to deteriorate following a deadly border clash in late May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some restrictions have already been introduced since the confrontation. Now tighter screening will be introduced at all land border checkpoints in at least five provinces. Border crossings will be limited to people with essential needs, including study, medical issues or critical purchases. Shinawatra said the aim was to prevent casino tourism and transnational crime operations allegedly operating from Cambodian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have also moved to limit travel to Siem Reap by air, cut internet access to Cambodian security agencies, and are considering halting exports that could aid scam-related infrastructure. Casino operator Donaco International has already reported declines in visitor numbers and hotel occupancy at its DNA Star Vegas resort in Poipet. The company expects a notable dip in June revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cambodia has retaliated by blocking certain Thai internet services and halting energy exports. Domestically, Shinawatra also faces growing political pressure following a leaked phone call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen and the recent withdrawal of the Bhumjaithai Party from her ruling coalition<\/a>. The political instability has cast uncertainty over the administration\u2019s controversial push to legalise casinos in Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n
