Authorities are talking with hotel owners and merchants amid fears of a drop in business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Macau.- Government officials are holding consultations in a bid to create plans to mitigate the economic impact of the closure of most satellite casinos by the end of 2025<\/a>. In response to growing concerns among hoteliers and business owners in the Outer Harbour Reclamation Area<\/strong> (ZAPE\/NAPE), the Economic and Technological Development Bureau<\/strong> (DSEDT) has been conducting field to learn about their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least nine of Macau\u2019s eleven satellite casinos are to shut by December 31, 2025<\/a>, which marks the end of a three-year transition period agreed upon by gaming concessionaires and their satellite partners. The majority of the casinos are in the ZAPE\/NAPE districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior officials from the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the Office of the Secretary for Economy and Finance (GSEF), and DSEDT recently met with representatives of approximately 20 ZAPE-area hotels. MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes <\/strong>underscored the administration\u2019s commitment to revitalising the area, calling the meeting a “vital opportunity” to gather feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among initial proposals presented are efforts to bring internationally recognised intellectual property to Macau, extend the benefits of concerts, improve the use of local spaces for events and enhance the general environment. Tourism authorities also encouraged hotel operators to develop new promotional strategies and diversify their service offerings to attract a broader range of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions remain. On the same day, over 70 businesses gathered to voice opposition to the casino closures, claiming the government has underestimated the economic impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An estimated 5,600 local workers are currently employed at satellite casino operations<\/a>, with the majority working under the umbrellas of major concessionaires Galaxy, Melco, and SJM. The closures threaten not just employment but also the viability of adjacent hospitality and retail businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n
